Everyone wants a bike that performs like a WorldTour steed. Most of us don’t want the price tag. That’s where the Colnago AC-R comes in. The geometry is identical to their M10s, a bike that took Team Europcar riders to numerous victories in the biggest stage races in the world.
The ride matches the M10s as well. This is thanks to both the monocoque construction, which was employed with the M10s as well as the general tubing shapes, which are nearly identical, though somewhat simplified. You’ll still find a triangulated downtube and skinny seatstays as well as a full-carbon straight-blade fork. The monocoque’s shaping as well as the carbon mix are where Colnago is able to bring down costs a bit.
The bike’s frame tubes are a bit bigger than is typical of Colnago, but still more slender than is typical of carbon-fiber frames. The resulting ride is smoother than you’ll find from most carbon bikes but a bit stiffer than is the norm for the Cambiagians. They like fast rides that don’t feel twitchy or nervous. It’s a nice ride, stiff at the head tube, thanks to the conical shape, tapered steerer, and 1 1/8” to 1 ¼” headset bearings, and through to the bottom bracket, but still comfortable for long miles. It’s fine for narrow racing tires, but if the road is rough, you’ll have room for fitting 25mm tires as well.
They thought of this bike as a way to get the M10s when you’ve got more ambition than your experience should allow. The bike is designed with a 31.6 seatpost in mind, which is both light and stiff. The bottom bracket is English-threaded to allow for easy sourcing of central movements.
Another important decision they made was positioning the cabling. The derailleur cables, be they mechanical or electronic, run inside the downtube. It’s a clean look and prevents the cables from getting gunked by the elements. But the rear derailleur cable exits at the bottom bracket shell and runs externally to the housing stop. And the rear brake cable runs externally as well.
Colnago is big on durability. It’s a reason they were late to adapting their designs to internal headsets. It’s also why their internal headsets are designed to be replaced in case of damage or a crash. The headset will fail before the fork or head tube.
